Al has extensive knowledge across the design of stadia, sports master planning and elite training facilities, having worked both in Australia and internationally on some of the world’s best venues with global design firm Populous. He is also an ex-professional sportsman who was the most capped prop in the history of Australian Rugby Union when he retired in 2011. His time as a professional sportsman, combined with his design expertise, makes him uniquely qualified to create venues loved by players and spectators alike. Al led the team on the design of CommBank Stadium, as well as the design of the NSW Rugby League Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park.
Al has also been involved in a number of training facilities, including the AIS High Performance Centre, St George Illawarra Dragons Training Facility, and West Coast Eagles Training Facility, and has led various master plans, including the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre integrating the Australian National Winter Olympic Training Centre with significant education and community sport facilities. Al also led the master plan for the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and the RAS of NSW at Sydney Olympic Park.
Since his retirement from professional rugby, Al has also taken on several Board roles, including as a Director of the Australian Steel Institute and a Director of the Cauliflower Club Rugby Charity. Al has also previously served as the President of NSW Rugby Union, a Trustee on the NSW Government Statutory Authority Sydney Living Museums and was a Director on the Rugby Union Players Association.
